Los Cancajos Sea View La Palma

Los Cancajos

Having stayed in the nearby Santa Cruz de La Palma the previous year, and having been impressed by the snorkelling off the coast of Los Cancajos, we decided to stay in the resort itself for a few days this year. Having hired a car, we figured that it would make a better base as it avoided town centre driving, has ample parking on the side streets, and has the added bonus of excellent snorkeliing yards from the apartment.

Alas, all our considered planning was scuppered by the enormous waves crashing into the beach. For the 5 days we were there, we were met by the forlorn sight of a red flag flapping on the beach. The one time it was downgraded to yellow, it was raining. No swimming or snorkelling for us.

So, what else does Los Cancajos have to offer? As stated previously, if you have a car it makes a good base in that its location is close to some of the main roads of the island. It is also very close to the airport so transfer times are minimal, literally 5 minutes. The planes are so close when taking off, you can practically touch them. Given that I love plane watching this is a positive to me, not a negative. As it is only a small airport, the number of flights is minimal so this really wouldn’t ruin your holiday. The town is also walking distance to Santa Cruz de La Palma (there is also a regular bus service), which is always a good place to mooch around. There are a small number of adequate restaurants and a couple of supermarkets in the town so foods not a problem. It is also a clean resort and well landscaped with a nice coastal path which ,takes you from end to end of the town.

It is however, a purpose built resort made up almost entirely of hotels and holiday lets with no discernable town centre. It’s not a charming little fishing village so if you are looking for authentic Spanish culture you’re not going to find it in Los Cancajos. Our stay was slightly ruined by the poor weather so it is unfair to be too negative about the place. If you have a car it makes a good base for exploring the island. If you don’t have a car, and you are happy to chill out with a good book and a glass of wine, there are definitely worse places to be. I seems to be very popular with the retired; we’re not young but compared to most people in the place we were spring chickens. If you are young, looking for adventure and great nightlife, I implore you, don’t stay here!

More From La Palma

Los Llanos

Staying in Los Llanos De Aaridane again. This is I think our favourite town in the Canary Islands. So laid back.

Whale Watching Tazacorte

Went whale watching today. Loved the first hour. Felt sea sick, still feel like I'm going up and down with the boat on dry land.

Fuencaliente To Los Llanos De Aridance Walk

It was a bus from Los Llanos to Los Canarios today to climb up a hill at the end. Too cloudy up top though so we walked back, 25km; my feet hurt!

Los Cancajos Snorkelling

This was a surprise, this is a great place to snorkel, red crabs on the rocks.

Los Cancajos

Staying in a winter retirement village for few day, and boy do we feel young!

Tazacorte And Snorkelling

Sea is quite calm here today but the water is still too murky to see anything much snorkelling.

Caldera De Taburiente Walk

Didn't do the caldera walk last year, came back to do it this year. Well worth it. Earned a beer!

Good Accomodation La Palma

Found a couple of great apartments in La Palma, and few bad ones.

El Pilar Walk

quick strole in the hills now, well that was the plan, turned into quite a hike.
