Having passed through the port town of Agaete on the west coast of Gran Canaria last year, and having noted the beautiful tranquil bay and spectacular hills just perfect for hiking in, we decided to spend a few days there this year to do a spot of exploring.

What a difference a year makes. Last year, on a glorious sunny day, the sea twinkled in the sunlight, and the hills and valley were filled with colour. This year, as our boat chugged into harbour after a stomach churning crossing from Tenerife, we were met by hues of grey- the sea, the sky, the landscape.

That said, the port of Agaete, called Puerto de Las Nieves, is undeniably a very pretty place. The front is lined with traditional fish restaurants advertising the catch of the day. Being a Sunday when we arrived, the little town was heaving, with locals and day trip visitors all out for their Sunday lunch. If you were looking to define pretty little fishing village, Puerto de Las Nieves would be your answer. Incredibly cheap too; for example, the restaurant we went to, Restaurante El Cápita, charged 12 Euros for fish of the day, which included 3 large fish, calamari, some shrimps, Canarian potatoes and side salad. It was enormous!

The architecture of Agaete and Puerto de Las Nieves almost look Greek in their appearance; white washed low level box like buildings spreading up into the hill, with narrow cobbled lanes criss-crossing the town. We stayed at a place called Las Cuevas Del Arte, just up the hill from the port and on the outskirts of Agaete. Obviously inspired by the Canarian artist César, the design features of the place were really unusual and quirky, using every day items such as rope, saucepan lids and tree trunks to give the place a unique look. Parts of the apartment were built into the rock; our bedroom was like a cave.

Unfortunately, the quality of the weather peaked on our arrival. For the next 2 days it rained almost continuously, with the odd hailstorm thrown in for good measure. A short break in the almost incessant rain allowed one quick swim, but due to the high winds and ominous rain clouds, hiking in the surrounding hills was a non-starter. So, for 2 days we sat in our cave like dwelling, listened to the hailstones bouncing off the corrugated roofing getting more and more miserable, making the occasional foray to the supermarket.

Although having booked for 4 days, waking up on the third day to see yet even more grey clouds, and upon checking the weather forecast to see no change in sight, we cut our losses and hopped onto the first bus out of town, and headed off to Las Palmas and civilisation.

In summary, Agaete looks to be a glorious place in good weather. With beautiful surroundings, a fine bay and good food it would be a great place to stay. In bad weather though, it’s a bit grim and depressing.

Visited more pharmacies than restaurants, searching for Spanish treatments for man flu. Gripe del hombre (it does not translate)

Agate

Booking for 4 days here in January was a mistake. Weather very bad and stuck in a César Manrique style, uncomfortable accommodation. We are leaving early, sod the money.

Good Accomodation Las Palmas

Back in our old apartment from last year, much better than the hole we just stayed in near Las Canteras beach.
